Genesis 40 Study: Joseph Interprets Dreams in Prison

Trusting God when you are forgotten by people.

Genesis 40 (World English Bible - WEB)

1: It came to pass, after these things, that the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their lord, the king of Egypt.

2: Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.

3: He put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison where Joseph was bound.

4: The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he served them; and they were in custody for some time.

5: They both dreamed a dream the same night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, and each man according to the interpretation of his own dream, in a single night.

6: Joseph came to them in the morning, and looked on them, and saw that they were sad.

7: He asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sad today?”

8: They said to him, “We have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them.” Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me, please, the dreams.”

9: The chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “In my dream, behold, a vine was before me,

10: and in the vine were three branches. It was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters ripened into grapes.

11: Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand. I took the grapes, pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.”

12: Then Joseph said to him, “This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days.

13: Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head, and restore you to your place; and you shall put Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, as you did when you were his cupbearer.

14: But remember me, please, when it is well with you, and please show me kindness, and make mention of me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house;

15: for I was indeed stolen away from the land of the Hebrews; and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.”

16: When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, “I also had a dream. Behold, there were three white baskets on my head,

17: and in the uppermost basket there were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds ate them out of the basket above my head.”

18: Joseph answered, and said, “This is the interpretation of it: The three baskets are three days.

19: Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head from you, and hang you on a tree. The birds will eat your flesh from you.”

20: It came to pass, on the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants. He lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants.

21: He restored the chief cupbearer to his office, and he put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.

22: But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.

23: Yet the chief cupbearer didn’t remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Introduction

Genesis 40 highlights God’s faithfulness and sovereignty, even in times of waiting and uncertainty. While Joseph is imprisoned in Egypt, he encounters Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker, each troubled by mysterious dreams. Joseph, through God’s guidance, interprets their dreams accurately, demonstrating that God is still at work even when circumstances seem bleak.

This chapter reminds us that God can use every situation, including hardships and delays, to prepare us for His greater purposes. Joseph’s patience, faith, and reliance on God in prison set the stage for his future elevation and the fulfillment of God’s plan.

Genesis 40 teaches us about trusting God during seasons of waiting, recognizing His guidance in every situation, and being faithful with the opportunities He gives, no matter how small or difficult.

As we begin today’s devotional, may we trust God in our waiting, seek His wisdom in every challenge, and remain faithful, knowing He is orchestrating His plan in our lives.

Joseph Serving Faithfully in Prison (Genesis 40:1–4)

Even though Joseph was falsely imprisoned, he still served others with diligence. God honors faithfulness in hidden places.

Reflection: Are you faithful when nobody sees? God watches, remembers, and rewards faithfulness.

God Gives Joseph Revelation (Genesis 40:5–19)

Joseph clearly stated, “Interpretations belong to God.” This shows humility and dependence on God’s wisdom. God will give insight to those who rely on Him.

Teaching Point: True spiritual insight comes from God—not our intelligence or ability.

When People Forget You (Genesis 40:20–23)

Joseph asked the cupbearer to remember him—but the man forgot. Yet God did not forget Joseph. The delay was part of God's divine timing to elevate him later.

Encouragement: People may forget you, but God never forgets. His timing is perfect.

5-Minute Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the life of Joseph and the lessons in Genesis 40. Thank You for showing me that even when life is difficult, You are still working. Lord, help me to remain faithful in every season, even when the environment is not favorable.

Father, give me the heart of Joseph—a heart that serves, trusts, obeys, and remains humble. Teach me to rely on You for revelation, wisdom, and guidance. May I never lean on my own understanding but always seek Your voice.

Lord, I surrender every area of my life where I feel forgotten or overlooked. Remind me that You have not forgotten me. Strengthen my faith and help me to wait patiently for Your perfect timing. Open the doors You have ordained for me and close every door that is not Your will.

God, use my gifts even in hidden places. Let Your favor rest upon me, and may Your presence guide me daily. I put my hope in You. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
